We'd been to Deadwood previously and were disappointed to discover it's now lost much of its Old West charm and become a gambling town taken over by casinos for the most part.

Still, enough remnants of the Old West remain to make it worth a visit.

Deadwood was where Wild Bill Hickok was shot and killed during a poker game in Saloon #10. It's where he and Calamity Jane are buried side-by-side.

saloon no. 10

saloon ten.avif
real saloon 10.jpg

What's advertised as Saloon No. 10 is not the original Saloon No. 10 where Wild Bill Hickok was killed. It is an operating replica that includes, yes...a casino. The original Saloon No. 10 is down the street, in the basement of a bar in which the building owner charges you $20 to go down into the basement to look around. (Above)

It's obviously staged to look like any typical Old West saloon.

The replica of Saloon No. 10 is located at 657 Main Street. The real original site of Saloon No. 10 is located at 624 Main Street, Deadwood.

The original location of Nuttall & Mann's #10 Saloon at 624 Main Street, burned down in the tragic fire of 1879. There are no known photographs of the original saloon. Today, the original location is occupied by a bar. In 1938, a "new" Old Style Saloon #10 was recreated across the street at 657 Main Street, which continues to operate today.

It was at this original location that
Wild Bill Hickok was shot by Jack McCall on August 2, 1876. The prior evening when Hickok was playing poker with several men, including McCall, Jack lost heavily. Wild Bill generously gave him back enough money to buy something to eat, but advised him not to play again until he could cover his losses. This obviously humiliated McCall who would take his revenge the next day.

Calamity Jane's grave

After Wild Bill Hickok's death, Calamity Jane made known her wishes to be buried next to Wild Bill - which was done.

Both are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery, next to one another.

The cemetery sits atop a hill overlooking Deadwood.

To get to this cemetery one must climb a very long staircase that's located between two suburban houses.

There's no charge to visit the Mount Moriah Cemetery.
