Most people don't think of Milwaukee as a vacation destination and yet "Brew City" has so much to offer besides breweries. Sitting right on the shoes of Lake Michigan, there’s an undeniable energy in fun, urban-easy Milwaukee. While still celebrating our beer brewing heritage, the city now has a powerhouse arts scene, big-city attractions, revitalized historic districts, numerous James Beard-nominated chefs and a burgeoning “locally sourced” culinary movement. You can easily spend a week and not run out of things to see and do - although I do suggest you visit in the summer if you're a warm weather kind of person and anyway, that's when the city's really hopping!

Transportation

Milwaukee offers several free tourist transportation options to help you explore the city without additional costs. Here are some of the best ways to get around Milwaukee for free:

The Hop Streetcar: A free streetcar service that connects popular neighborhoods and attractions in downtown Milwaukee. It offers a free ride for all passengers and features roll-on, roll-off access for wheelchairs, strollers, and bicycles.

Lake Express Ferry: A state-of-the- art auto passenger ferry linking Milwaukee with Muskegon, Michigan. The 2 hour trip offers a faster and more direct route than driving south around Lake Michigan through the Chicago area

Accessible City Buses: All Milwaukee city buses are wheelchair-accessible via a ramp at the front of the bus, Other accessible rides can be arranged though local non-emergency transportation companies like Tootl or zTrip.

Amtrack Train: The Amtrack train between Milwaukee and Chicago is also wheelchair accessible.

These options provide convenient and cost-effective ways to explore Milwaukee's attractions and neighborhoods. Enjoy your visit and make the most of the free transportation services available in Milwaukee.

However, you're still going to want your car or a rental car to really get around to the outlying areas of Milwaukee.

Accommodations

Whether you want to stay in the heart of the action in downtown Milwaukee or prefer a little more solitude in one of the outlying areas of Milwaukee, there's a variety of accommodations to choose from that will suit every budget. Here are some of Milwaukee's top hotels...

For the kiddos...

Milwaukee is one of Wisconsin's coolest and most fun cities. I lived there for awhile before moving north and there was always something to see and do, especially during the summer months.

The Midwest in general is very family oriented so I'm going to gear the following itinerary primarily toward families with kids, although most everything in the itinerary will be suitable for solo travelers, couples, and adult travelers without kids as well. (Especially if they're just big kids at heart!)

Itinerary - Day 1

Check into your accommodations and get settled in. Since the kids are probably antsy with pent up energy from a long car ride or flight, we're going to get right into the action of exploring Milwaukee. There are many ways to do this so I'll list them and you choose what best suits you:

For the kids...

Let's face it, kids have...well...short attention spans. So we're going to give them a way to explore Milwaukee that's both fun and will hold their attention longer.

The best way for kids to explore Milwaukee is via scavenger hunt. See the sights of Milwaukee while learning facts about the city on an entertaining and interactive scavenger hunt. This app-based game will lead you through the city, challenging you with trivia questions and tasks as you pursue the items on your list. This is a fun group activity for anyone looking for a playful and memorable way to get to know Milwaukee. (Keeps the kids from getting bored!)

This scavenger hunt is approximately 2 hours long and costs $14.99 per adult. It usually books about 2 weeks in advance.

For adults...

Join a Free Guided Walking Tour of Downtown Milwaukee. These tours typically start at popular locations, enabling you to delve deep into Milwaukee’s rich history and vibrant culture. You’ll have the opportunity to interact with knowledgeable guides who will share fascinating stories and insights about each landmark.

Moreover, these tours usually cover key attractions such as the Milwaukee City Hall and the Fifth Ward. As you stroll through the cityscape, you’ll learn about the local architecture and industry, making it an enriching experience for both locals and visitors. Participation is free, but tips are appreciated!

Get there a few minutes early as these tours fill up quickly!

If you'd rather take a Two-Hour Milwaukee City Sightseeing Bus and Walking Tour for One, currently Groupon is offering 20% off the tour.

I got hooked on this place years ago! When you're looking for a SafeHouse, we've got you covered - but you'll have to know the secret password. Just behind the door marked International Exports, Ltd., you'll find Agent MoneyPenny guarding the entrance and ensuring each spy knows the password. We would never turn an agent away though, and those without knowledge of the password will be required to do a clearance test to prove they are not a double agent.

Your mission: Enjoy a fun night out with your fellow spies at their bar, or a covert daytime recon with your junior spies. The food is on the simpler side but it's good and so are the drinks. From time to time they also have special events like murder mystery parties scheduled.

Day 2

Morning: Have breakfast at Blue's Egg & Bakery,  317 N 76th St, Milwaukee.

blues.jpg

Blue's Egg + Bakery has quickly become a cherished gem in Milwaukee's breakfast scene. Their menu is nothing short of a creative culinary playground.

If you're on the hunt for the ultimate breakfast experience in Milwaukee, look no further than Blue's Egg + Bakery.

The fantastic service is every bit as good as the food. The staff is friendly and eager to share their recommendations.

Sunday - Saturday:7:00 am - 2:00 pm

Explore the Milwaukee Riverwalk by walking or biking it.

The RiverWalk connects three downtown neighborhoods through an approximately 20-block pedestrian promenade on either side of the Milwaukee River. The downtown RiverWalk runs through the heart of the city, past gleaming skyscrapers, hotels and restaurants. To the south, it connects to the Historic Third Ward's RiverWalk, This neighborhood is often likened to a miniature "SoHo," filled with 19th-century architecture, boutique shops, art galleries and thriving nightlife. The Beerline "B" makes up the northernmost portion of the River Walk. Milwaukee's brewing heritage is evident here. It's found in the gleaming, Cream-City brick buildings of the former Schlitz Brewery to the riverside home of Lakefront Brewery, award-winning craft brewers carrying on a cherished Milwaukee tradition. While each RiverWalk segment has a distinct

riverwalk east.jpg

personality, they are unified by art – in the form of both permanent and changing exhibitions. This outdoor gallery adds to the natural beauty and ambience to be experienced long the way.

The Riverwalk is open 24 hours a day, all year round, so there’s always something to see. Wander the full three-mile stretch to truly make the most of bustling markets, public artworks and other riverside events. (It's especially beautiful at night!)

The great thing about a stroll along the shoreline is that it winds through three of Milwaukee’s most culture-rich districts. Day or night, you can plan out as much or as little as you’d like to see.

If you’re on the hunt for a Milwaukee selfie-spot, then a visit to resident tough guy, the Bronze Fonz, is a great stop. At 5ft 6, this statue is a perfect homage to Herny Winkler who played Fonzie in Happy Days.

Swing Park dangles just below the Holden Street Bridge and has become one of Milwaukee’s favorite hidden gems. Take some time away from the world and enjoy this secret playground before you continue your walk along the riverfront.

Of all the Milwaukee sights to see, the RiverSculpture! outdoor gallery could be the most creative. Scattered along the Riverwalk, you’ll find sculptures from the sizeable to the abstract, understated and whimsical – without ever needing to veer far off trail. Sculptures celebrate local and regional artists and feature a range of permanent and periodic pieces.

Stop at Pere Park. Named after Father James Marquette, this picturesque park is perfectly placed along the Milwaukee Riverwalk – a great stop for a picnic and has a host of its own things to do.

You can get aboard one of the Riverwalk Boat Tours for a cruise, to bob along and see the city from the water. If you want to steer your own ship, check out the pontoon boat rentals and become your own captain.

Both kids and adults will like the riverside dining patio. One word of caution: If there's live music inside, the place gets REALLY noisy due to all of the interior glass.

Tucked away inside the Physics building on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus is a hidden gem for families around Milwaukee. The Manfred Olson Planetarium offers live, interactive programming for kids and families to learn more about the night sky and the cosmos.

Adults:
bradford.jpg

In summer in Milwaukee, "It's cooler near the lake!" How true! In Milwaukee, there's no place cooler to cool off than on the Fresh Coast. Lake Michigan's shore is home to several swimming, wading, and sunbathing beaches. (Swimming in the lake is at your own risk.)

The most popular beach in the park system is Bradford Beach. In 2009, it was one of Wisconsin's first beaches to receive Blue Wave Certification from the Clean Beaches Council of Washington, D.C. Since then, the beach has undergone a rebirth as a center of summer fun, and in 2020, improvements to Bradford Beach made it the most accessible beach in America.

Bradford Beach features a permanent concrete ramp to access the beach and seasonal portable rollout mats (shown below) that provide access to the water. Reserve a beach wheelchair that features wide tires to allow you to maneuver in the sand and into the water. Reserve a wheelchair from The Dock: (414) 791-5440

Have your lunch at the beach.

moosas-2019.jpg
TheDockAtBradfordBeach600x400.jpg

Moosa's, at the south end of Bradford Beach, serves burgers (including the Impossible burger), brats, walking tacos and more … and of course, custard!

Kick back and relax while enjoying the beach, the sand, the lake, great food, and drinks! The menu at The Dock includes appetizers, salads, burgers, wraps and tacos. The drink menu offers a selection of beers, wine and cocktails.

There's nothing more relaxing than a day of sun and surf, especially if summer temperatures in Milwaukee are hot and humid. Milwaukee has multiple sand beaches - McKinley, Grant Park, Bay View Park, Bender Park, Big Bay Park, Tietjen Beach, Sheridan Park and South Shore Park...but Bradford is by far the most popular Milwaukee beach.

Bradford and McKinley beaches close at 9 pm. The rest of the beaches close at 10 pm.

My family had season tickets so I grew up going to the Rep. Loved it...I never saw a show there that wasn't fantastic. That they're even performing again is nothing short of a miracle.

Everything in the production center was lost and even the building itself was a total loss in excess of $5 million - just as they were beginning production on A Christmas Carol, premiering November 25th.

Money $aving Tips: Groupon currently has a deal off tickets off A Christmas Carol.

Day 6

Morning: Have breakfast in the historic third ward Milwaukee Public Market.

Modeled after the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Milwaukee Public Market is the most well-known indoor dining hub in Milwaukee. In fact, it is the landmark of the Third Ward.

Rather than a single restaurant, it hosts many that can please everyone’s palate. You can find seafood, vegan options, sandwiches, charcuterie, and salads. Also, you can find different cuisines such as Mexican, Thai, and deli items, or even bakery, candy, wine, and coffee.

The market is bustling from morning till night.

Spend the morning browsing the Market. As a side note, classes are also offered at the Market. Both hands-on and demonstration classes offer a wonderful opportunity to expand your culinary skillset while working with high-quality ingredients, including spices from The Spice House. Each class includes generous samples and water, with beer and wine available for purchase.

With a variety of food options for the whole family, yard games like cornhole and shuffleboard, and a small kids play area, it’s perfect for all ages to enjoy.

As one visiting reviewer wrote:
Always listen to the locals

I was rolling solo for the night whilst in town for a conference. I happened upon the Brat House and made my way inside. I immediately procured a bar stool by a friendly local. After a lengthy discussion on what to order he convinced me to try the sampler plate. Now I thought I was gonna get maybe smaller portions, but it was 4 full size sausages. One Brat, a cheddar brat, hot Hungarian and a Italian sausage. I also ordered a side of tots. What can I say but thank you to the local fella for steering me right.

With two locations, one in the vibrant Downtown and another nestled in the charming Shorewood neighborhood, Milwaukee Brat House proudly serves up a hearty menu of bratwurst and other pub favorites.

They also run shuttles to Brewers home games, Summerfest, State Fair, events and concerts happening in the Milwaukee area. Drinks are welcome on the ride there and back and shuttles are free with a food or beverage purchase.

City of Festivals

Milwaukee is a city of festivals. If possible, visit Milwaukee during one of Milwaukee's many festivals.

Summerfest
summerfest.jpg

Summerfest is a massive music festival held annually in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Known as "The World's Largest Music Festival," it attracts nearly a million visitors each year. But what makes Summerfest so special? It's the combination of diverse music acts, delicious food, and a vibrant atmosphere that keeps people coming back. From rock legends to up-and-coming artists, there's something for everyone. Plus, the festival's location along the shores of Lake Michigan offers stunning views and a refreshing breeze.

The festival's home is the Henry Maier Festival Park, a sprawling 75 acre venue on the shores of Lake Michigan. The park features 12 stages, each hosting different genres of music, the main stage accommodating 23,000 people.

Summerfest isn't just for adults; there are plenty of activities for families and kids to enjoy. These activities make the festival a fun experience for all ages:

  • The Children's Fest Day offers free admission for kids under 12.

  • There are interactive exhibits and activities designed specifically for children.

  • The festival includes a family-friendly area with games, rides, and entertainment.

  • Kids can enjoy performances by magicians, clowns, and other entertainers.

Summerfest is held over 3 weekends. In 2025 it was held June 19-21, June 26-28, July 3-5.

Summerfest is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of music, life, and togetherness. Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of this incredible event.

Wisconsin State Fair

Every summer, something magical takes over West Allis—a celebration of flavor, tradition, and big-hearted fun that’s been going strong for nearly two centuries. In 2025, the Wisconsin State Fair returns for its 174th year from July 31 to Aug. 10, ready to welcome over a million visitors to 11 days of unforgettable summer adventure. With its roots stretching back to 1851, this beloved event has become one of the Midwest’s most cherished traditions, bringing together everything that makes Wisconsin feel like home.

Most Wisconsinites mark their calendars to attend the State Fair - it's claim to fame being (believe it or not) the best cream puffs you'll ever eat anywhere.

cream puffs.jpg

At this year's fair over 330,000 cream puffs were sold.

They're so popular that this year fair management installed a Cream Puff Drive Thru - pick up your cream puffs without ever leaving your car.

The cream puffs are just the beginning. Hungry guests can embark on a culinary treasure hunt across the grounds, discovering the wild, inventive, and downright outrageous dishes crafted by food vendors competing in The Sporkies, Wisconsin’s ultimate food competition. Think deep-fried peanut butter pickles, cheese

curd-stuffed burgers, and over-the-top desserts like bacon-wrapped deep fried Twinkies that make each bite an event.

But the Fair isn’t just a feast for your taste buds; it’s an explosion of sights, sounds, and experiences around every corner. Music lovers can follow the rhythm to dozens of free stages where regional bands, tribute acts, comedy shows, and family-friendly performances keep the energy high from morning to night. The Bank Five Nine Amphitheater, the largest free entertainment venue on-site, offers show-stopping entertainment all day long, while the State Fair Main Stage delivers a powerhouse lineup of nationally touring artists.

Ag Village is a highlight for visitors of all ages, where barns full of cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and more showcase Wisconsin’s rich agricultural heritage. Fair-goers can watch live milking demonstrations, chat with young exhibitors, and admire the care and pride behind every ribbon-winning animal. Inside Grand Champion Hall, the competitive spirit continues with stunning displays of handmade quilts, pickled vegetables, homegrown flowers, baked goods, and other creations that speak to the talents of locals across the state.

Spin City is the Fair’s vibrant amusement ride and game zone, offering rides for both little kids and the older crowd.

The Wisconsin Products Pavilion is another crowd favorite, allowing visitors to support local makers and sample everything from fresh dairy to gourmet popcorn, craft beverages, and small-batch snacks.

At its heart, the Wisconsin State Fair is a love letter to the state’s agricultural roots, cultural pride, and creative spark. It’s where generations gather to share laughs, eat well, cheer on a blue ribbon winner, and soak up the spirit of summer together.

Daily admission to Wisconsin State Fair starts at $13 for children (ages 6 to 11) and $20 for adult (ages 12 and over). Discounts are given to military, seniors, and veterans. For those looking for tickets to State Fair Main Stage events, prices vary from $67 to $88, depending on seating in the arena. Each Main Stage ticket includes admission to the State Fair for the day of the show when purchased before entering the State Fair.
