Most people don't think of "Brew City" as a vacation destination. Heck, most people don't think of Wisconsin as a vacation destination! But having lived in Milwaukee I can tell you it's a fun city with a whole lot to offer!

Sitting right on the shoes of Lake Michigan, there’s an undeniable energy in fun, urban-easy Milwaukee. While still celebrating our beer brewing heritage, the city now has a powerhouse arts scene, big-city attractions, revitalized historic districts, numerous James Beard-nominated chefs and a burgeoning “locally sourced” culinary movement. You can easily spend a week and not run out of things to see and do - although I do suggest you visit in the summer if you're a warm weather kind of person and anyway, that's when the city's really hopping! Especially when festival season rolls around. I don't know of any city that has as many festivals as Milwaukee does.

Let us show you around Milwaukee!

Milwaukee offers free public transportation through "The Hop," a streetcar service that allows riders to travel around downtown without any fare.

The Hop is completely FREE to ride. There are no tickets or vouchers needed; you can simply hop on and off as you please.

In case you're asking yourself "What's that thing?" It's not a futuristic-looking bus. The Hop is actually an electric streetcar that runs around the downtown area.

hop milw transit.jpg

The Hop connects downtown neighborhoods, offering convenient, accessible rides with no fare required.

It runs along a main route approximately two miles long, with an extension to the lakefront, connecting key areas such as the Lower East Side, Downtown East, the Third Ward, and the edge of the Menomonee Valley.

But to get around outside of downtown your best bet is to rent a car.

flamingtext_com-177993757.png
milwaukee-mitchell-international-airport-700x420.png

Flying into Milwaukee is super easy! There's only one airport that handles commercial flights, both international and domestic - Mitchell Field. I don't particularly have any love of airports but I do like Mitchell Field's airport. It's clean, easy to navigate and the employees are friendly and helpful. Nor do you have to take a train, bus or anything else to get from terminal to terminal like you do that nightmare of an airport, Chicago's O'Hare.

Layout of Mitchell Field airport:

mke.png

There's plenty of parking in the garage right across the street from the terminal.

The airport provides free shuttle bus service between the terminal and the rail station, with shuttles arriving every 5-10 minutes. Ground Transportation

There are soooooo many superb accommodations in and around downtown Milwaukee it would be impossible to list them all. One of the best Milwaukee scavenger hunts I've done was the Amazing Scavenger Hunt Adventure.

This will be the last year you can visit the Milwaukee Museum at its current location, before it moves to its new digs in 2027.

It generally takes 2-3 hours to tour the entire museum.

Afternoon: Depending on how long you spend at the Museum, you can bring your own lunch to the Museum or purchase lunch at the cafe.

Alternative: Walk not quite 3000 feet to one of Milwaukee's most unique and frequented downtown bars and restaurants, The Safehouse. 779 N Front St, Milwaukee

safehouse.jpg

Filled with wall-to-wall with spy memorabilia from the Cold War era, the espionage-themed Safe House has been one of the best kept secret institutions in Milwaukee since 1966. It's so secret it requires a secret password to gain admittance! (Ask your accommodations front desk personnel for the password) OR...

I'll give you an easier way to get the password: Phone Safehouse at (414) 271- 2007, identify yourself as an employee of your hotel, tell whoever answers you have some tourists that want to visit but you need the password to give them. *Grin*

safehouse2.jpg

Their menu includes appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, mac 'n cheese, the classic Wisconsin Friday fish fry, and of course, a full bar including mocktails.

For your junior spies there's a decent kids menu.

SafeHouse-4-1.webp

Give the OOMG Burger Challenge a shot. You must go rogue for this mission. 15-patty cheeseburger, 2 lbs of cheese curds, and 51 ounces of code beer.

Complete this mission in an hour or less and receive the meal for FREE, plus spytastic prizes!

(Likely including a tour of nearby Froedtert Hospital emergency room to have your stomach pumped!)

Money $aving Tip: Spare yourself a several thousand dollar tour of the Froedtert Hospital ER and don't even attempt the OOMG Burger Challenge!

The Safehouse OOMG Burger Challenge

Seriously though, Safehouse is unique and fun place for both adults and kids alike.

The Pabst Mansion

 2000 West Wisconsin Avenue Milwaukee

pabst-mansion-summer-credited_1.jpg

The Pabst Mansion is the foremost example of a preserved 1890s Gilded Age Mansion in the Midwest, and across the country.

It was built by the Pabst family, the infamous Milwaukee beer brewing tycoons. It's also now a museum as well.

Elizabeth  1865-1891   Gustave  1866-1943   Marie  1868-1947    Frederick, Jr.  1869-1958   Emma  1871-1943

With their descendants now down to the great-great-great-great grandchild level and over two hundred and fifty direct descendants, the Pabst family still finds interest and meaning in their family home, as do all those who visit.

You can take a virtual tour of the mansion here.

Several different tours of the mansion are offered:

TOURS

Guided Tours

  • A docent-led 60-minute tour of the Pabst Mansion.  Visitors learn about the Pabst Mansion, Pabst family and details about the architecture and furnishings of the home while exploring the first through third floors.

Self-guided Tours

  • Visitors can explore the Pabst Mansion at their own pace with the accompaniment of a self-guide packet and docents available within the exhibition spaces to answer questions.

Milwaukee Riverwalk District

RiverWalk-700x467.jpg
fonz.jpeg

I like walking the 3 nile stretch of Riverwalk too because there's always something new going on or to see and do. It's great to stroll during the day but it's quite pretty at night and really comes alive then.

Riverwalk features a unique outdoor art gallery, RiverSculpture!...be sure to find the bronze statue of The Fonz and take a selfie there. Just off of Wells Street, the Bronze Fonz is a must-visit selfie spot.

The Riverwalk is open 24 hours a day, all year round, so there’s always something to see. Wander the full 3 stretch to truly make the most of bustling markets, public artworks and other riverside events.

Admission is FREE.

Pere Marquette Park

500 N Harbor Dr, Milwaukee

pere park.jpg
cabin posts.jpg
perepark_signj-removebg-preview.png

Pere Marquette Park is located right beside the Riverwalk. 900 N. Plankinton Ave. Milwaukee.

Pere Marquette is a beautiful 1.9 acre park with a slightly European feel to it.

During the summer months, this park is home sunbathers and picnickers, and it also plays host to the River Rhythms concert series. On Friday nights in August, don't miss the open-air cinema.

Evening: Hop on The Hop at Riverwalk and ride it to Mader's Restaurant. 1041 N Old World 3rd St, Milwaukee.

Maders1.jpg

Since 1902, this Milwaukee landmark has been serving American Presidents, and celebrities America's finest German cuisine. You'll dine surrounded by a $4 million collection of medieval suits of armor, wood carvings, oil paintings, two-handed swords, crossbows and magnificent stained glass.

schnitzel.jpg

I highly recommend any of the schnitzel dishes although you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Try their Black Forest Torte for dessert.

A meal at Mader's always reminds me of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater as that's where we'd go for dinner after attending "The Rep" (as we call it). Never saw a bad performance there and loved the Rep even as a little kid. 108 East Wells Street, Milwaukee.

rep.avif

That they're even up and performing again is nothing short of a miracle.

Everything in the production center was lost and even the building itself was a total loss in excess of $5 million - just as they were beginning production on A Christmas Carol.

The Rep holds both matinee performances and evening performances. Ticket prices depend on seating, date and times of the performance being attended. Ticket Office: 414-224-9490
tickets@milwaukeerep.com

Since moving into their new building, The Rep has added a dining option.

Milwaukee Rep has a restaurant and bar located in the Stackner Cabaret. They offer a full-service dining experience with an extensive menu as well as a three-course prix fixe menu and a full bar.

  • Dinner Service: Due to increased safety measures and limited dining capacity, reservations are required for dining at the Stackner Cabaret.

  • Prix Fixe Menu: We offer a three course meal for $30.00 if purchased in advance and $32.50 if ordered at the table. The menu comes with multiple options for your three courses and has been a favorite with not only our patrons but the downtown dining crowd in general. View the dinner menu here.

  • Matinee options: For both the Saturday and Sunday matinee performances we offer a limited food/drink menu. If you are seeing the performance in the Stackner that day you do not need a reservation. View the matinee menu here.

Money $aving Tips: Check out the Rep's Discount page. The Rep is one of the few Milwaukee attractions that offers a Pay As You Can Afford option, although a $10 donation would be appreciated.

Bradford Beach on Lake Michigan

bradford.jpg

In summer in Milwaukee, "It's cooler near the lake!" How true! In Milwaukee, there's no place cooler to cool off than on the Fresh Coast. Lake Michigan's shore is home to several swimming, wading, and sunbathing beaches. (Swimming in the lake is at your own risk.)

The most popular beach in the park system is Bradford Beach.. In 2009, it was one of Wisconsin's first beaches to receive Blue Wave Certification from the Clean Beaches Council of Washington, D.C. Since then, the beach has undergone a rebirth as a center of summer fun, and in 2020, improvements to Bradford Beach made it the most accessible beach in America.

Bradford Beach features a permanent concrete ramp to access the beach and seasonal portable rollout mats (shown below) that provide access to the water. Reserve a beach wheelchair that features wide tires to allow you to maneuver in the sand and into the water. Reserve a wheelchair from The Dock: (414) 791-5440

Have your lunch at the beach.

moosas-2019.jpg
TheDockAtBradfordBeach600x400.jpg

Moosa's, at the south end of Bradford Beach, serves burgers (including the Impossible burger), brats, walking tacos and more … and of course, custard!

Kick back and relax while enjoying the beach, the sand, the lake, great food, and drinks! The menu at The Dock includes appetizers, salads, burgers, wraps and tacos. The drink menu offers a selection of beers, wine and cocktails.

There's nothing more relaxing than a day of sun and surf, especially if summer temperatures in Milwaukee are hot and humid. Milwaukee has multiple sand beaches - McKinley, Grant Park, Bay View Park, Bender Park, Big Bay Park, Tietjen Beach, Sheridan Park and South Shore Park...but Bradford is by far the most popular Milwaukee beach.

Bradford and McKinley beaches close at 9 pm. The rest of the beaches close at 10 pm.

Afternoon: If you opted to take the kids to Discovery Center, then take them out for lunch at National Pizza Pub and Grille, 5501 W National Ave Milwaukee.

As any Milwaukeean can tell you, you can't leave Milwaukee without having eaten at Kopps. They have 3 Milwaukee locations and all 3 are packed during the summer.

Eat just one of their burgers (they're HUGE!) and you will be hooked. Not to mention the frozen custard they're noted for!

You'll wait in line but it's worth the wait! Trust me on this one!

When I visit Milwaukee I will not leave the city without

having eaten at Kopps.

Try one of the KRK burgers for $9.25 - topped with ketchup, mayo, fried onion, cheese, bacon, more cheese, tomato, raw onion, even more cheese, pickles, spicy mayo on a toasted bun. OMG TO DIE FOR!

North Point Lighthouse

2650 N Wahl Ave, Milwaukee

north point lighthouse.webp

Visiting the North Point Lighthouse is like stepping into a charming maritime storybook.  I was met by a team of staff who radiated enthusiasm for their cherished lighthouse.

The North Point Lighthouse has a 74-foot tower and a Queen Anne-style Keeper’s Quarters. It’s located between two ravines in Lake Park on a two-acre semi-wooded parcel. Before its decommissioning in 1994, the Lighthouse contributed to Milwaukee’s trade and economic growth. It’s also one of the oldest structures that stands in the now-urban area.

The North Point Light House has been preserved and restored to its early 20th-century charm through the determined efforts of a group of committed volunteers, the North Point Lighthouse Friends, Inc., formed in 2002. Since completion of restoration in the fall of 2007, this historic site is open to the public for tours and visits.

Guided and self-guided tours; kids must be at least 5 years old and 38″ tall to climb the 74 foot tower. The climb includes 84 steps and a short ladder leading into the lantern room.

The Ladybug Building

The Milwaukee Building is a block off the Milwaukee River, on N. Water between E. Michigan and E. Wisconsin. 618 N Water St, Milwaukee. The ladybugs can be seen any time, day or night.

ladybug bldg.webp

The bugs crawling down the front of this office building are almost as big as a '68 VW Beetle.

Officially it’s the Milwaukee Building, but since 1999 few have called it that. Back then, looking to help shake some of the drab off of its downtown office towers, the city of Milwaukee went on a beautification bender, and one of their pet projects was this building. After all, what better way to add some architectural zest to a generic building than three giant ladybugs?

The insects, each 10 feet long, were added to the façade as an art installation, adding stark but whimsical contrast to the glass and metal cladding and with the 19th-century buildings scattered around it. There are pretty standard office suites on the upper floors (some are available if you’re in the market), and on the ground floor there have been a couple of different nightclubs.

One venue, aptly named the Ladybug Club, opened and closed by 2010. But there’s a new hotspot in the space now, called 618 Live on Water. The ladybugs are clearly climbing down the building, not up. If they make it to the entrance they might just get carded.

Note: Live on the Water in Milwaukee is currently closed, and there is no specific information available regarding its future operations in 2026. However, the venue "Fire on Water" is still operational and continues to host live entertainment. Additionally, the "LIVE @ the Lakefront" concert series is scheduled to return in 2026, indicating that live events are planned in Milwaukee.

National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum

170 S 1st Street, Milwaukee

bobblehead museum.webp

Milwaukee is home to several museums - including quirky ones, like the Bobblehead Museum.

At the world's only museum entirely dedicated to bobbleheads, you can learn about the history of this singular head-nodding doll, browse through the thousands of bobbleheads that are on display, and even design a custom oversized plastic head in your own likeness. â€‹

bobbleheads custom.jpg

While the bulk of the collection is sports figures, you will also see the wobbling heads of cartoon characters, pop-culture icons, celebrities, politicians, and even a six-foot-tall, life-sized bobblehead.

The museum has been open since February 2019, but the co-founders, Brad Novak and Phil Sklar, have been collecting bobbleheads since 2002. Once they announced plans to open a museum, bobblehead collectors began adding to the assortment. Today the collection numbers more than 15,000 bobbleheads, with some 10,000 having been on display at the Milwaukee museum. (Reportedly they're still on display there.)

To visit, enter at the door under their logo at the northeast corner of the building next to the parking lot and take the stairs or elevator to the 2nd floor. They are located in the same building as Colectivo.

brats.jpg

You can't leave Wisconsin without having a bratwurst! It's one of the state's 4 major food groups and a tailgating must!

As one visiting reviewer wrote:
Always listen to the locals

I was rolling solo for the night whilst in town for a conference. I happened upon the Brat House and made my way inside. I immediately procured a bar stool by a friendly local. After a lengthy discussion on what to order he convinced me to try the sampler plate. Now I thought I was gonna get maybe smaller portions, but it was 4 full size sausages. One Brat, a cheddar brat, hot Hungarian and a Italian sausage. I also ordered a side of tots. What can I say but thank you to the local fella for steering me right.

With two locations, one in the vibrant Downtown and another nestled in the charming Shorewood neighborhood, Milwaukee Brat House proudly serves up a hearty menu of bratwurst and other pub favorites.

They also run shuttles to Brewers home games, Summerfest, State Fair, events and concerts happening in the Milwaukee area. Drinks are welcome on the ride there and back and shuttles are free with a food or beverage purchase.

flamingtext_com-34396334349.png
talossa.png

The official flag of Talossa

It doesn't get more weird and quirky than this...and it could only come from Wisconsin -A trailblazing sovereign nation tucked in the American state of Wisconsin.

The territory lines of the Kingdom of Talossa started out small, its boundaries encompassing just the bedroom of a 14-year-old Milwaukee boy who had just lost his mother.

It was December 26, 1979, when young Robert Ben Madison decided to secede from his country, declaring his bedroom to be the

sovereign nation named after the (quite lovely) Finnish word for "inside the house". On that day, Robert became the founder of one of the longest standing micro-nations still in existence, The Kingdom of Talossa.

At first, the constitutional monarchy created by the lonely boy was something to keep him busy—relatives and friends humored him by agreeing to become citizens. As Madison traveled through adolescence, he created a flag and published a newspaper and created an emblem that read in Finnish "A Man's Room Is His Kingdom". His subjects probably assumed it was a passing obsession, and Madison would grow out of it eventually. Then, the internet happened. Madison made his kingdom a website in the mid-90s, and suddenly Talossa was big news. The media caught wind of Madison's little hobby, and he and his micro-nation, a term he claims to have coined, went viral. The Kingdom expanded out of Madison's bedroom—first to a whopping 5 sq. miles, and eventually claimed a decent portion of Milwaukee, as well as several random locations around the world. (One of the more amusing land claims is a large portion of Antarctica, which they have dubbed "Penguin-Land.")

The fantasy grew more and more detailed, playing out a bit like a very long-running role-playing game. Talossa developed a government with its own political parties, a culture, a fictional pre-history, and it's own anthem. Talossa eventually even developed its own language, which has been carefully curated and fine-tuned over the decades and has its own 28,000-word dictionary.

Like any growing nation, the Kingdom of Talossa had its troubles. In 2004, some citizens of the seceded nation seceded themselves, developing the Republic of Talossa. Madison reigned as king until 2005, when he abdicated due to more trouble in little Talossa. Immigration policy had come under fire, and the king decided that maybe he should hand the keys of the kingdom over to someone a little younger, someone who had the energy to rule—his wife's 8-year-old grandson seemed up for the task, and King Louis was crowned.

A year later, the 4th grader had had enough, and King John (a citizen named John W. Wooley) was elected into the office, where he still sits as head of state. Under his rule, the 18 disgruntled Republic members eventually came back into the fold, and Talossa is once again a peaceful, single nation.

Milwaukee is known as a city of festivals. If possible, visit Milwaukee during one of Milwaukee's many festivals.

flamingtext_com-1460290440.png
summerfest.jpg

Summerfest is a massive music festival held annually in Milwaukee. Known as "The World's Largest Music Festival," it attracts nearly a million visitors each year. But what makes Summerfest so special? It's the combination of diverse music acts, delicious food, and a vibrant atmosphere that keeps people coming back. From rock legends to up-and-coming artists, there's something for everyone. Plus, the festival's location along the shores of Lake Michigan offers stunning views and a refreshing breeze.

The festival's home is the Henry Maier Festival Park, a sprawling 75 acre venue on the shores of Lake Michigan. The park features 12 stages, each hosting different genres of music, the main stage accommodating 23,000 people.

Summerfest isn't just for adults; there are plenty of activities for families and kids to enjoy. These activities make the festival a fun experience for all ages:

  • The Children's Fest Day offers free admission for kids under 12.

  • There are interactive exhibits and activities designed specifically for children.

  • The festival includes a family-friendly area with games, rides, and entertainment.

  • Kids can enjoy performances by magicians, clowns, and other entertainers.

Summerfest is held over 3 weekends. In 2025 it was held June 19-21, June 26-28, July 3-5.

Summerfest is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of music, life, and togetherness. Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of this incredible event.

flamingtext_com-39787629.png

Every summer, something magical takes over West Allis—a celebration of flavor, tradition, and big-hearted fun that’s been going strong for nearly two centuries. In 2025, the Wisconsin State Fair returns for its 174th year from July 31 to Aug. 10, ready to welcome over a million visitors to 11 days of unforgettable summer adventure. With its roots stretching back to 1851, this beloved event has become one of the Midwest’s most cherished traditions, bringing together everything that makes Wisconsin feel like home.

Most Wisconsinites mark their calendars to attend the State Fair - it's claim to fame being (believe it or not) the best cream puffs you'll ever eat anywhere.

cream puffs.jpg

At this year's fair over 330,000 cream puffs were sold.

They're so popular that this year fair management installed a Cream Puff Drive Thru - pick up your cream puffs without ever leaving your car.

The cream puffs are just the beginning. Hungry guests can embark on a culinary treasure hunt across the grounds, discovering the wild, inventive, and downright outrageous dishes crafted by food vendors competing in The Sporkies, Wisconsin’s ultimate food competition. Think deep-fried peanut butter pickles,

cheese curd-stuffed burgers, and over-the-top desserts like bacon-wrapped deep fried Twinkies that make each bite an event.

But the Fair isn’t just a feast for your taste buds; it’s an explosion of sights, sounds, and experiences around every corner. Music lovers can follow the rhythm to dozens of free stages where regional bands, tribute acts, comedy shows, and family-friendly performances keep the energy high from morning to night. The Bank Five Nine Amphitheater, the largest free entertainment venue on-site, offers show-stopping entertainment all day long, while the State Fair Main Stage delivers a powerhouse lineup of nationally touring artists.

Ag Village is a highlight for visitors of all ages, where barns full of cows, pigs, sheep, goats, and more showcase Wisconsin’s rich agricultural heritage. Fair-goers can watch live milking demonstrations, chat with young exhibitors, and admire the care and pride behind every ribbon-winning animal. Inside Grand Champion Hall, the competitive spirit continues with stunning displays of handmade quilts, pickled vegetables, homegrown flowers, baked goods, and other creations that speak to the talents of locals across the state.

Spin City is the Fair’s vibrant amusement ride and game zone, offering rides for both little kids and the older crowd.

The Wisconsin Products Pavilion is another crowd favorite, allowing visitors to support local makers and sample everything from fresh dairy to gourmet popcorn, craft beverages, and small-batch snacks.

wisconsin-state-fair-1.jpg

At its heart, the Wisconsin State Fair is a love letter to the state’s agricultural roots, cultural pride, and creative spark. It’s where generations gather to share laughs, eat well, cheer on a blue ribbon winner, and soak up the spirit of summer together.

Daily admission to Wisconsin State Fair starts at $13 for children (ages 6 to 11) and $20 for adult (ages 12 and over). Discounts are given to military, seniors, and veterans. For those looking for tickets to State Fair Main Stage events, prices vary from $67 to $88, depending on seating in the arena. Each Main Stage ticket includes admission to the State Fair for the day of the show when purchased before entering the State Fair.
