Since a Halloween trip isn't in the cards for us this year, I thought I'd share a rather unusual Halloween trip we took last year to celebrate my birthday - my birthday gift from Jay.
It all started with an electric foldable E bike (my first birthday gift from Jay), a couple's membership in Historic Hudson Valley, and our charity work with Make A Wish Foundation.
Somehow the man managed to roll all three into one. Make that four...he squeezed my love of trains in there too.
The best place to be on Halloween (in our opinion) is Sleepy Hollow, NY, about an hour from Jay's home. This is where the Make A Wish charitable event was being held.
Halloween in Sleepy Hollow is not a spur of the moment trip to plan as over 180,000 people typically attend the festivities and everything books up months in advance. But I'll share our trip with you if you someday want to celebrate Halloween in the Hudson Valley.
Jay knows my love of trains so we took the train from the NY
South Street & Grand Street station to Tarrytown. Cost: between $12-$24.
(This is why the foldable bikes, you can take them on the train without having to get a special permit.)
At Tarrytown he'd rented a car.
Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow were once the same town until Tarrytown became its own town, so now they're adjoining villages 2.2 miles apart. You can walk between them but during the busy Halloween season with the traffic I wouldn't advise doing that unless you have a desire to become road kill.
As is the case anywhere nowdays, Hudson Valley ticketed Halloween
events don't come cheap. You have to weigh this for your own situation but Jay felt a dual couple membership in Historic Hudson Valley was beneficial - not only for Halloween but other special events during the year since he only lives an hour away.

We didn't want to be right in town with all of the crowds and accompanying noise so Jay had booked us an Executive Giest Room with Club Lounge access at Sheraton Tarrytown Hotel.
Member Prepay Rate $235 per night - 15% Executive Room discount - Senior discount.= brought us in under $200 per night.
Breakfast in the Club Lounge was included, there was a mini fridge in the room, a restaurant on-site besides the M Club Lounge, free parking and WiFi, an indoor heated pool. The room was clean and very comfy. Staff was great, we had a wonderful stay there.

Castle Hotel & Spa has closed AGAIN with no announcements to reopen.

Camping in Sleepy Hollow NY
We considered taking the BEAST and camping but after reading RV and campers' mostly negative reviews on all 3 campgrounds we decided NOPE! (2 of them are state campgrounds)
But here they are:
Croton Point Park
Overnight campers receive parking with their campsite. Day visitors may pay seasonal parking fees (typically weekends and summer), but campers do not pay an additional day-use parking fee.
Located on a peninsula overlooking the Hudson River, Croton Point Park is the closest campground to Sleepy Hollow. It offers tent sites, RV sites with hookups, cabins, hiking trails, waterfront views, and easy access to the village, making it the ideal base camp for exploring Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, the Old Dutch Church, and October events.
Newburgh KOA Holiday
RV sites, cabins, and tent sites available. Parking for your vehicle is included at your campsite or cabin. Extra vehicles may incur a small additional fee depending on your site type.
If you prefer resort-style camping, Newburgh KOA Holiday offers cabins, deluxe cabins, RV sites, tent camping, a swimming pool, mini golf, Wi-Fi, playgrounds, and organized family activities. It’s the most amenity-rich option, though it’s also the farthest from Sleepy Hollow, about 1 hour away.
Harriman State Park
31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of hiking trails, three beaches, public camping areas, and miles of streams and scenic roads. One vehicle is allowed at each campsite. Additional vehicles are charged, with an extra car parking fee of $6 per night.
New York’s second-largest state park offers a much more secluded camping experience than Croton Point. With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, lakes, and dense forests, it’s perfect if you want to combine a visit to Sleepy Hollow with a classic outdoor adventure. Beaver Pond Campground includes tent and RV sites along with cabin rentals.
If you’re visiting during spooky season, Book 4–8 months ahead as weekend availability disappears quickly. Stay Sunday–Thursday, you’ll usually find lower prices and fewer crowds. Choose hotels within 10 minutes, parking becomes limited during major October events, so staying nearby saves significant time.
Money $aving Tips: Most restaurants in Hudson Valley don't take reservations during the spooky season.

Book accommodations that include breakfast with your stay to avoid crowds and long wait lines for at least one of your daily meals.

Eat at "off rush" meal times.

Dine outside any of the village downtown restaurants. They're the busiest, typically with long wait lines. There are plenty of good dining establishments outside of the downtown areas.

Take advantage of farmers markets and pack a picnic.
We actually arrived the night before our Day 1 Itinerary because we got in so late. I also no longer have the 2025 Halloween events schedule so will give you the current 2026 events schedule.

Silly us...we decided to bike to Sleepy Hollow from Tarrytown. Given the traffic I'm surprised we arrived in Sleepy Hollow life and limb intact and didn't end up hood ornaments on someone's car. But when you get old like us you tend to throw caution to the wind, knowing you already have one foot over death's doorway..."What the hell! Let's give it a shot!"

The good folks there can give you the lowdown on everything...what to see or not see, least crowded days and times to hit which events, best restaurants and when to hit them, etc.
They're a wealth of information and can help you maximize the time you have on your trip to see and do everything you want to.
The Chamber covers both Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.
Tip: Planning a Sleepy Hollow Halloween is enough to make your head spin when it comes to the events offered. Prioritize! Pick out the #1 attraction or event you want to see/attend, then the #2 attraction or event and so on.
Try to stick to 1 or 2 timed and/or ticketed events per day or you can burn
yourself out very easily just dealing with the crowds and the lines.

Take A Stroll Around Sleepy Hollow Village
Even if you're not in the mood to shop or eat at one of the downtown restaurants, lock your bike up and take a stroll down Main Street just to see the Halloween decorations.
Some of the window displays are really cool. And while you're there, take a selfie with Rip Van Winkle.

It is a Bronze statue that captures the character created by Washington Irving.
Rip Van Winkle depicts the literary character reclining. He has a large beard and crumpled hat and his eyes are half-open as if he has just woken up. His boots and hands blend in with the ground like he has become part of the ground.
It is located on Irvington's Main Street under a beech tree between Town Hall and the Main Street School.
The Headless Horseman Files
Held at Philipsburg Manor at 10 am

You gather the clues and reach your own verdict.

We had more darned fun with this Whodunit!
The residents playing the parts of the various characters were great to work with and you get to see the grounds of manor without taking a traditional blah blah blah tour.
Something is lurking in the shadows, too. The Headless Horseman doesn’t wait for nightfall here.
(That Headless Horseman sure gets around!)
Recommended for ages 8+. One stretch takes place in near-darkness. Timed admission; advance tickets recommended.
Bike or Walk the Riverwalk
The Sleepy Hollow RiverWalk at Edge-on-Hudson is a newly restored public park and pedestrian promenade along the Hudson River, designed to reconnect the community with a stretch of shoreline that had been inaccessible for over a century.
The RiverWalk runs from River Street in Sleepy Hollow north to the historic 1883 lighthouse. In short, the Sleepy Hollow RiverWalk contains a scenic, walkable riverfront promenade with plazas, lawns, seating, and sweeping views, plus connections to parks, trails, and seasonal festivities, making it both a recreational and cultural destination. Even for the Headless Horseman. Don't be surprised if you see him charging toward you!
You can now rent E-bikes around Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Since 2013, New Yorkers have been able to use an app to pay a nominal fee to liberate the bike from a designated station, hop on and, when done, drop it off at another bike station near their destination. You can now do the same in the Hudson Valley.
Now residents of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown (age 18 and older) can take advantage of a similar bike sharing program, but one that uses e-bikes that provide an extra electrically powered oomph, thus taking the bite out of the Hudson
Valley’s many steep streets.
To avail themselves, consumers must first download the Project Mover app. The E-bikes will be stationed at a dozen locations around Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown (see map), including the Metro North station west of the tracks and as far removed as the parking lot on the southwest end of the Tarrytown lakes.
Like those in the Citi Bike program, Project Mover bikes can be accessed through a downloadable app. Each bike has a QR code on or about the handlebars. A cell phone photo will unlock the tether and permit the user to ride off. Knowing where other e-bike stations are is an important piece of the process. It will cost a dollar to unleash the bike and 20-cents-a-minute for usage, so it’s important to check it back in at another station at the end of a ride. If a renter has glitches on either end of the rental process, the app has answers.
In addition to the single-use pricing, Project Mover offers a monthly option that provides for 30 minutes a day for $20. There is also an affordable biking pricing option for users who can show their incomes qualify.
While this is a great option to have, at 20 cents a minute for usage you're better off bringing your own bike if you can.
Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse
Kingsland Point Park, Sleepy Hollow
As long as you're down by the waterfront visit the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse. Or if like us you've seen more than your fair share of the insides of lighthouses, the views of the lighthouse make for some great photos.
Or on October 4th you can join a 45-minute interpreter-led tour of the Tarrytown Lighthouse in Sleepy Hollow and discover the story of this 1883 cast-iron “sparkplug” light — from its years guiding steamships past dangerous shoals to the keepers and families who once called its five-story tower home.
Tours are FREE; reservations are required and parking fees may apply. Please note: the lighthouse is accessed by four narrow stairways, there are no restrooms inside (restrooms are available in the park), and the front gate locks 15 minutes after the tour begins. Tours run rain or shine.
You can reach the lighthouse by a scenic 10-minute stroll from either inside Kingsland Point Park or from the RiverWalk entrance at the foot of Beekman Avenue.
Afternoon: Lunch at Beekman Ale House, 92 Beekman Ave Sleepy Hollow.
Beekman Avenue is Sleepy Hollow’s main business district. It connects Route 9 (Broadway) with the Hudson River waterfront.
A young local guy recommended Beekman's to us, said it was the best pizza he ever ate. Well, being from two areas notorious for fabulous pizza we had our doubts but figured we'd give Beekman's a shot.
I'd love to know how they get the crust so thin without it flopping all over the place. But the young guy was right...superb pizza. So good I'm sure we polished off our pizza in what I'm reasonably certain was Guiness Book world record breaking time.
They offer 11 (some unique) varieties of pizza plus a Pie Of the Week special.
We ordered the French Onion pizza - caramelized onions. parsley and gruyere cheese - YUM! $23 for a 12" pie.
And their Halloween decorations were a work of art.

Now that we're all full of pizza hop back on your bike and it's a 1-1.5 mile (8 to 12 minute) ride to our next stop.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
540 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow
Seriously, one of the best things to do in Sleepy Hollow! The 90-acre graveyard is adjacent to the Old Dutch Reformed Church and was established in 1849 as the Tarrytown Cemetery but the name was eventually changed to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
I'm going to save you the cost of a guided tour here.
FREE legal-sized maps, perfect for a short, self-guided tour to major figures in the cemetery, are available in literature boxes at both entrances to the grounds. A full-color, 17” x 20” map to more than 50 special features of the cemetery is available for purchase online through Sleepy Hollow Gifts.
Also available at the Philipsburg Manor museum shop across the street from the cemetery’s south gate.
The 17"x20" map will tell you everything about the tombstones/graves that a tour guide will - for a lot less money. And you can wander through the cemetery at your own pace.

It is a stunningly beautiful cemetery, especially in fall, when the trees are a swath of painted color, it’s a wonderful place to explore on foot. There are 2 guided tours you can take - a daylight tour and a night lantern light tour.
Know that these tours include a steep hill, some stairs and grassy, unpaved gravel roads. There is no place to sit down during the tour. Please consider your own abilities before purchasing a ticket.
Guided tours: Saturdays and Sundays through Thanksgiving weekend from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and 3:00-4:00 p.m. Weekdays in October from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Weekends in October also 11:00 a.m. - 12 noon.
It’s quite surprising how many famous and prominent Americans are buried here; Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden, Leona Helmsley, Brooke Astor, and William Rockefeller all have made this their final resting place. The Hudson Valley, in general, hosts the country retreats and rambling estates of a notable list of American rich and famous.
But of course, the most sought-after gravesite is that of Washington Irving himself, buried at the Irving family plot, not far from the church, and marked with an iron gate bearing the name Irving.
It’s up on a hill and his gravestone is a little set back, among the stones of other family members, making it a little hard to read, but there is something humble and charming about that, considering the fact that, at the time of his death, Irving was world famous.

Normally cemeteries don't creep me out in the least but this cemetery can feel eerie at times. When we were looking at Washington Irving's gravestone this big honkin' black crow the size of an A30 Airbus landed nearby and just stared us down. ???
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery SOUTH GATE, 430 North Broadway. There is plenty of free parking inside the gate.
Old Dutch Church & Burial Ground
People get confused about the Old Dutch Church and it's graveyard and the Spooky Hollow Cemetery. The Church and it's graveyard sit within the Spooky Hollow Cemetery grounds but they are their own separate entities.
Founded in 1685 by early Dutch settlers in America, this is one of the oldest working churches in the country and it is part of the legendary Washington Irving story.
During October is about the only time the church is open to visitors to see the inside.
The interior is pretty in a very simple way.
And it's the only active working church I've ever seen that has a woodburning stove in it.
This is where the headless horseman chased Ichabod in the book. Pick up a booklet at the church, and you can explore the grounds and their significance in the book’s events. You can visit the final resting place of the Van Tassels. You can also see the final resting place of Jäger’s headless corpse. It is theorized that this is where Irving got inspired by the character of the headless horseman. You must arrive before 4:30, as the grounds close at this time.
Headless Horseman Bridge
415 N Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, NY
This always confuses people because the actual location and bridge that the Headless Horseman hurled a pumpkin at Ichabod Crane’s head over the Pocantico River is a modern-looking bridge that cars travel over on Broadway on Route 9.
There are actually 5 wooden bridges, none of which are the actual location and bridge.
if you want a more authentic looking wooden bridge to accompany the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and the tale of the Headless Horseman, there’s a popular wooden bridge often photographed in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery nearby you can check out.
To find it, from the modern Headless Horseman Bridge you will drive into the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and take the furthest right road along the Pocantico River. As you’re driving along the river, you will come across a little wooden bridge that’s perfect for photos directly parallel to Andrew Carnegie’s Grave. The drive will take less than 2 minutes and if you’re visiting by foot the walk is less than 15 minutes following this route.

Bistro 12 is one of the best places to eat in Tarrytown, NY. It is a favorite restaurant providing authentic Portuguese cuisine.
The food is expertly prepared and is beyond mouthwatering, whether you crave pasta dishes, seafood, salad, meats, and/or soups. The Seafood Risotto Lobster with shrimp and scallops will make sense if you love seafood.
The restaurant is unpretentious and elegant, with beautiful indoor décor.
Bistro 12 is open on Sunday to Saturday, from 12 – 3 pm, and 5 – 9 pm.
Murder Mystery

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was published just over 200 years ago, and the literate world is holding a convention to celebrate! Plus, convention organizers promise a spectacular revelation–the discovery of Irving’s initial draft, which is scheduled to be read in public for the very first time, by none other than noted Washington Irving impersonator, Zephyr Shatner! But things are not always what they seem, secrets and lies swirl around every corner, and before the night is over, somebody will lose their head!
Enter a world of mayhem, madness, and absolute silliness in this one-of-a-kind interactive murder mystery event! Everyone is a suspect, even you! Players will be assigned a character beforehand and are encouraged to arrive in costume. Learn secrets and accomplish goals to earn money that you use to purchase clues to help you unravel the mystery.
This is not an event for wallflowers! At this party, YOU are part of the action and should be ready for anything! You might even end up being the murderer! Who do you trust? Who do you believe? Can you unmask the killer in your midst before they strike again?

"SURPRISE! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"
My brain doesn't fire on all cylinders in the morning without least one cup of coffee in me...but I'm slowly piecing together why Jay booked a big room with two beds.
I'm beyond thrilled that they've joined us as I love spending time with the two of them, especially on trips together! And no, we don't mind a bit sharing a room with them...we have a blast with them.
They change out of their Sleepy Hollow attire and we head to breakfast together at the hotel Club Lounge.
Let the fun begin!
Better yet, they've brought their E-bikes along because we're going to bike into Sleepy Hollow again. But first we're going to visit the Farmer's Market.
Irving Farmers Market
Main Street School Lot - 101 Main Street, Irvington, NY
The Irvington the farmers market is definitely worth a walk through. Admission is FREE.
Fresh fruits and veggies; homemade jams, jellies and bread,
meats, fresh flowers and much more - even live music!
Sunday parking is available along the streets of Irvington village as well as in the municipal lot at the top of Main Street. Please avoid using the permit-only lot across from Main Street School.
The market runs on Sundays rain or shine–9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Headless Horseman Statue
Directions: From the Tarrytown Sheraton to the Headless Horseman statue in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, the distance is roughly 3–4 miles, a 20-25 minute ride.

From the Sheraton, you can head south on Broadway toward the Tappan Zee Bridge bike path.

Follow the bike path east across the bridge, then continue on the Old Croton Aqueduct bike path.

The path will take you through the Riverwalk and into Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

The Headless Horseman statue is located on the east side of Broadway, near the cemetery entrance
The Headless Horseman statue is located in the median of Route 9 (US-9/N. Broadway), between Philipsburg Manor and the Old Dutch Church in Sleepy Hollow.
We picked up our bikes at the hotel and headed off for Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman Statue.
The Headless Horseman statue is one of the most visited spots in Sleepy Hollow. Located in the Route 9 median between Philipsburg Manor and the Old Dutch Church, this 18-foot-tall sculpture of the Headless Horseman chasing Ichabod Crane was created by local artist Linda Perlmutter and fabricated by Milgo/Bufkin in Brooklyn. Its 11 tons of laser-cut corten steel panels were chemically treated to oxidize into a rich cinnamon hue.
The statue is a great spot for a photo, especially in October when the trees are in color and its base is festively decorated with pumpkins and hay bales.
Late Morning: We biked back to the hotel and had an early lunch at nearby Lefteris Gyro, 1 North Broadway Tarrytown.

Once seated our server quickly brought water and took our drink orders. The service was prompt.
My Greek Salad with Falafel was large enough to feed four people.
Jay ordered the lamb gyro, which came with a side of pita, Jude and Dee ordered the moussaka, which included a small Greek salad and pita as well They said the moussaka was excellent: a generous portion, well-seasoned, and perfectly layered with béchamel, ground beef and lamb, and potatoes. We ended the meal with a sweetened Greek coffee.
We even picked up a couple of bottles of their dressing since we'd bought stuff at the farmer's market to make salads with.
Spirits Of Sleepy Hollow Country
Philipsburg Manor, 381 North Broadway, Sleepy Hollow
Jay had scored four tickets for the 2 pm matinee of The Spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country. This show always sells out as soon as tickets go on sale.
Mark Clearview and Nick Wallace return to Philipsburg Manor this October with an original magic show built around the spirits of Sleepy Hollow Country — not generic stage spooks, but the local dead. Hulda of Bohemia, the healer the village called a witch. Major John André, the British spy caught just down the road in Tarrytown. And the Headless Horseman, who needs no introduction around here.
The premise is that none of them ever left, and all of them have something to say about it. What follows is an hour’s worth of illusion delivered with real comic timing — a magic show first, funnier more often than it is frightening, even as the lights drop and things begin happening that shouldn’t.
These guys are phenomenal and know how to play to an audience. The show was fantastic.
Recommended for 10 and up. Expect dim lighting, moments of suspense, and effects designed to startle.

As long as you're at Philipsburg Manor you may as well take a self guided tour. Guided tours are also available if you can fit their time slots into your day's itinerary. We had free tickets so took the guided tour.
Discover the many ways the enslaved community at Philipsburg Manor maintained family networks, shared their cultural heritage, and expressed their fundamental humanity in opposition to the inhumane system that bound them.
On Guided Tours, visitors are led throughout the site by costumed educators and visit the mill, manor house, activity center, and barn. Hands-on demonstrations take place in most of the spaces. Guided tours take approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and include walking both inside and outdoors, and up and down stairs. During Self-Guided Tours and Summer Saturdays, visitors are welcome to explore the site at their own pace and spend as long as they like participating in the different hands-on activities.
